课程简介

1. 课程概述

      慕课“英美音乐与文化”(“Music & Culture in English”)一门以英文流行歌曲为线索,由中、英、美三国教师组建的教学团队介绍英美文化历史的全英核心通识课程。语言是文化的载体,语言之所以有意义,是因为它的文化背景,而音乐是民族文化最核心的一部分,反映着民族的文化传统、风俗和思维习惯,是了解民族文化、学习语言的最佳途径。本课程深入探讨影响英美流行音乐形成的历史、政治、经济等因素及其对社会文化的影响。学习内容包括主要音乐流派的形成及其主要代表人物、音乐名人轶事、经典音乐赏析、相关话题深入探讨等。通过课程学习,旨在培养学生理性看待异国文化的态度、提高学生的跨文化交际能力、人文素养和英语语言能力。

2. 课程团队
    本课程教学团队采取中外教师合作的模式,周娉娣副教授为课程负责人。课程共12个单元,主讲教师Joe Kong 来自英国,主讲1-2单元,Ms. Caral Histand 教授来自美国芝加哥, 主讲3个单元;Ms. Natalie Olala 来自美国路易斯安纳,主讲4个单元;其余单元由中教教师完成。


3. 课程性质
     华南理工大学是直属教育部的全国重点大学,“985”、“211”工程和首批“双一流大学”重点建设的大学。本课程由2016年广东省精品视频公开课和华南理工大学国家精品课程“大学英语”系列课程的主干课程转型升级,是一门拥有10年开课历史、积淀深厚、理念创新、资源丰富、特色鲜明的慕课。
   本课程是全英核心通识文化课,目前为华南理工大学慕课学分课,由英国、美国和中国教师三国教师团队联合授课。本课程可供词汇量2000左右的各学科、各年级的英语或音乐爱好者学习。

4. 课程特点
    本课程创建于2008年,积累了丰富的教学经验,强调语言学习和人文素养齐头并进的教学理念,积极探索信息技术与大学英语教学的深度融合,不断优化更新教学内容,革新教学手段与方式,推进课程持续建设与发展。经过多年的建设与发展,本课程形成了体系完善、寓教于乐、资源丰富、师生共建、特色鲜明等特点。其特点主要有:
(1) 课程设计特色鲜明
本课程课程设计独辟蹊径,从音乐与文化的角度教授语言。语言是文化的载体,语言的理解依赖文化背景,音乐是文化与语言最好的结合,而音乐又深得人心。该课程对教师的人文素养、跨界知识、英语水平、语言教学理论等要求颇高,让英语母语者诠释英美音乐中的文化故事更具特色。这是一门让人无法拒接的英语学习课程,建课10年之久,常年校内选课爆满,至今未见同类课程。
(2)课程团队跨国协同
本课程组建了来自中国、英国和美国三国的7人教学团队,跨国融合,协同创新,聚力开展课程建设,由英、美母语者讲述他们自己音乐中的文化内涵,零距离接触纯正的第一手英美历史文化,为学生提供了开阔视野、兼容并蓄、博采众长、辩证看待异国文化的学习机会。
(3)课程设计重构创新
本课程是一个全新的课程,在教学理论和信息技术不断更新的情况下,根据慕课的特点,重构课程体系、课程内容和教学模式,充分体现慕课最典型、最前沿、最显性、最先进性的特点。
(4)课程资源师生共建
本课程团队充分利用“互联网+”时代信息技术的优势与特点,构建教与学新型关系,强调课程学习中师生、生生互动和学生参与课程建设,促进深度学习的发生,构建彰显课程特色的在线开放课程资源结构模型,注重课程资源的递进、迭代生成,课程资源丰富、实用性强。 

5. 学习目标
   通过本课程的学习,学习者能够理全面提升英语运用能力,正确理解英语使用中的文化内涵;培养学习者兼容并蓄、博采众长,形成理性、辩证、独到的看待异国文化的视角;同时提高学生的跨文化交际能力、人文素养和与他人协作的能力。

  • 周娉娣 华南理工大学 外国语学院 副教授

    Associate Professor Zhou Pingdi has been an instructor of English in South China University of Technology since 2003. She developed this course in 2005 for the purpose of finding an effective way to teach English with fun. She pursued her studies of “Music in American Culture” in University of California, Berkeley in 2014. She believes that pop music is an important part of culture, not just an expression of “Englishness” but also an indicator of the multi-culture nature of both America and Britain.

  • 陈艳艳 华南理工大学 外国语学院 博士

    CHEN Yanyan is currently the lecturer and Teaching Advisory Committee member of the School of Foreign Languages, South China University of Technology (SCUT). Her research interests include (1) teaching English as a foreign language; (2) English curriculum and pedagogy. She has got awards for teaching, including 2018 SCUT Excellence Award of Undergraduate Teaching, 2016 First Prize of FLTRP National English Teaching Competition, 2016 Champion Coach Award of 21st Century Cup National English-Speaking Competition, etc. She has been the principal investigator or collaborator of several grants and has also published several SSCI or EI indexed journal papers. She is indeed very fond of the Internet-based teaching. This online course is exactly such a great platform!

    I am Ruan Xichun, a lecturer from the Foreign Languages College at SCUT at the time of this recording. I received my undergraduate degree of English education from Xiangtan Normal University and graduate degree of English language and literature from Shanghai Normal University. Teaching is my childhood dream and I love discussing and sharing ideas with my students. I love music, that's why I love teaching this course of Music and Culture in English. I have been teaching this course for over 5 years, thus I am quite familiar with the topics in the video lessons and I am doing my best to present what I consider important and interesting to you.

  • Carla Histand 华南理工大学 外国语学院 教授

    Mrs. Carla Histand is an American professor of English in her second year of teaching at SCUT at the time of this recording. Her undergraduate and graduate degrees are in education (from Chicago, Illinois and Wichita, Kansas, respectively). She very much enjoys teaching and interacting with her students. She is happily married to doctor Gary Histand, a PhD Chemistry professor who is also teaching at SCUT, and they have one adult child who is also happily married. In addition to reading and music, Mrs. Histand enjoys physical fitness, nature and deep conversation with small groups of people. As a novice musician, she is knowledgeable about the topics which she presents in the video lessons and is in hope that you enjoy them.

  • Joe Kong 华南理工大学 外国语学院 讲师

    Joe Kong is a British born Chinese teaching fellow at the University of South China University of Technology where he teaches introduction to computer science, fundamentals of programming, cross-cultural communication, academic English as well as this course. He has a strong background in music having completed his ABRSM grade 8 piano, ABRSM grade 5 music theory and IGCSE music. Although Joe is classically trained in music he also enjoys a variety of pop, hip hop and R and B music amongst others. In his spare time Joe is either working on some data science and quantitative finance projects, at the gym or spending time with his girlfriend.

  • Natalie Olala 华南理工大学 外国语学院 讲师

    I grew up in St. Louis, Missouri, a city known for its music scene. As a child, my mother taught me to read music, and to play the piano, and as a teenager, I loved going to music concerts and listening to music. So when it came time to decide my major, I chose to study music. I studied music theory, music history, and a variety of musical instruments, including piano, guitar, and clarinet, and also singing. Since graduating from university, I have not pursued a career in music; I decided instead to move to China, and teach English. Music, however, is my life-long passion, and I am happy and privileged to be sharing it with you in this class.
