课程简介


课程“英美音乐与文化”(“Music And Culture in English”)是一门以英文流行歌曲为媒介,介绍英美文化历史的全英核心通识课程。

音乐并不是一种纯粹的艺术体裁,它诞生于一定时期的文化背景下,抒发人们的情感、反映着人们的社会生活。各种音乐根至于文化,反映社会文化的变迁,它是民族文化最核心的一部分。因此,音乐更是一种民族文化与情感的载体,是了解文化、学习语言的一种有效途径。

本课程采用中、外教师团队教学的形式,深入探讨影响英美流行音乐形成的历史、政治、经济等各个方面的因素及其对社会文化的影响。学习内容包括主题讲解、音乐欣赏、阅读讨论、文献视频观看、和单元测试等,以达到了解英美社会文化的目的。通过欣赏英美流行音乐促进英语语言学习,同时提高文化素养、达到陶冶心灵的目的。

  • 周娉娣 华南理工大学 外国语学院 副教授

    Associate Professor Zhou Pingdi has been an instructor of English in South China University of Technology since 2003. She developed this course in 2005 for the purpose of finding an effective way to teach English with fun. She pursued her studies of “Music in American Culture” in University of California, Berkeley in 2014. She believes that pop music is an important part of culture, not just an expression of “Englishness” but also an indicator of the multi-culture nature of both America and Britain.

  • Carla Histand 华南理工大学 外国语学院 教师

    Mrs. Carla Histand is an American professor of English in her second year of teaching at SCUT at the time of this recording. Her undergraduate and graduate degrees are in education (from Chicago, Illinois and Wichita, Kansas, respectively). She very much enjoys teaching and interacting with her students. She is happily married to doctor Gary Histand, a PhD Chemistry professor who is also teaching at SCUT, and they have one adult child who is also happily married. In addition to reading and music, Mrs. Histand enjoys physical fitness, nature and deep conversation with small groups of people. As a novice musician, she is knowledgeable about the topics which she presents in the video lessons and is in hope that you enjoy them.

  • Natalie Olala 华南理工大学 外国语学院 讲师

    Natalie Olala grew up in St. Louis, Missouri, a city known for its music scene. As a child, her mother taught me to read music, and to play the piano, and as a teenager, she loved going to music concerts and listening to music. So when it came time to decide her major, she chose to study music. Mrs. Olala studied music theory, music history, and a variety of musical instruments, including piano, guitar, and clarinet, and also singing. Since graduating from university, she has not pursued a career in music; she decided instead to move to China, and teach English. Music, however, is her life-long passion, and she is happy and privileged to be sharing it with you in this class.

  • 阮熙春 华南理工大学 外国语学院 讲师

    Ruan Xichun is a lecturer from the Foreign Languages College at SCUT at the time of this recording. She received her undergraduate degree of English education from Xiangtan Normal University and graduate degree of English language and literature from Shanghai Normal University. Teaching is her childhood dream and she loves discussing and sharing ideas with her students. She loves music, that's why she loves teaching this course of Music and Culture in English. She has been teaching this course for over 5 years, thus she is quite familiar with the topics in the video lessons and she is doing her best to present what she considers important and interesting to you.

  • 屈薇 华南理工大学 外国语学院 讲师

    Ms. Qu Wei contemporarily works as a lecturer at School of Foreign Languages, South China University of Technology. Her main courses taught include Zooming In: An Integrated English Course, English for Science and Technology, Media and Cultural Studies, and Music and Culture in English. As a fan herself, she enjoys listening to all kinds of music, and would like to share her love and passion to music and English culture with students.

  • 张天乾 南宁学院 公共教学部 教授

    Zhang Tian-qian, an English professor, works at Nanning University in Guangxi. He got his undergraduate and graduate degree in English education from Air Force University of Engineering and Beijing University of Aeronautics and Astronautics respectively. Up till now he has published more than twenty books and over thirty papers. He was and is responsible for organizing five key research projects at provincial or national level. His study field focuses on second language acquisition and information-based teaching. He puts forward a blended teaching model, i.e.“MOOC+ SPOC+flipped classroom” for college English courses based on Smart Education concept.
